History of Weslaco East High School

2000-2001 School Year

Weslaco East High School opened its doors in the fall of 2000. The new millennium brought

the addition of a second high school to this growing town in the center of the Rio Grande Valley,

Texas. That year, Weslaco East High School served only as a 9th and 10th grade students while Weslaco High School, housed the 11th and 12th grade students.

2001-2002 School Year

Weslaco East High School continued to educate 9th and 10th grade students. It earned the first ever TEA "Recognized School" rating for a Weslaco, Texas High School. WEHS made plans to add an 11th grade class of students during the 2002-2003 school year and a 12th grade class of students during the 2003-2004 school year.

2002-2003 School Year

Weslaco East High School expanded to include students in 9-11 grades as it grew nearer to its goal of being a full 4 year high school. Under the continued leadership of Principal, Sue Peterson, Weslaco East High School again achieved the academic status of being a TEA "Recognized School" .

2003-2004 School Year

Weslaco East High School had its FIRST class of graduating Seniors this year, it was a momentous occasion. The FIRST valedictorian was an amazing young woman, Ms. Cindy Hernandez, who plans on becoming a dentist. Cindy graduated from UTPA in December 2007. Judith Garza was our salutatorian. She graduated from Southern Methodist University in May of 2008. Weslaco East High School also had its first ever student appointed to the Air Force Academy, Mr. David Rodriguez. The 2003-2004 also saw the Governor of Texas, Mr. Rick Perry, visit Weslaco East High School. Weslaco Independent School District continued to be a TEA "Recognized School District" for the 8th consecutive year, making it the only 5A school district in the Rio Grande Valley to achieve such academic recognition.

2004-2005 School Year

Weslaco East High School graduated its SECOND class of students. One of the most dedicated students we have ever had, Mr. Homero Colunga, Jr. was our valedictorian. He graduated from UTPA in 2009 with a degree in Mathematics. Mr. Patrick Kennedy was our salutatorian. He graduated from UTPA in 2009 with a degree in History. He is currently attending law school.

2005-2006 School Year

Weslaco East High School graduated its THIRD class of students. Mr. Ruben Peralez was our valedictorian. He is attending the University of Texas- Austin. Mr. Michael Reyes was our salutatorian. He graduated from UTPA in December of 2010 with a degree in Mathematics.

2006-2007 School Year

Weslaco East High School graduated its FOURTH class of students. Ms. Miriam Aceves was our valedictorian. She is attending the Texas A & M University. Ms. Jacquelene Valdez was our salutatorian. She is also attending Texas A & M University.

2007-2008 School Year

Weslaco East High School graduated its FIFTH class of students. Ms. Cassandra Aponte was our valedictorian. She is attending the Texas A & M University. Ms. Alma G. Ochoa was our salutatorian. She is attending Rutgers University. WEHS received a Silver Medal Rating from US News and World Report this year, marking it as one of the United States Top High Schools.

2008-2009 School Year

Weslaco East High School graduated its SIXTH class of students. Ms. Grecia Y. Cepeda was our valedictorian. She is attending the University of Texas- Austin. . Ms. Cristina Flores was our salutatorian. She is also attending University of Texas- Austin.

2009-2010 School Year

Weslaco East High School graduated its SEVENTH class of students. Ms. Maria Rangel was our valedictorian. She is attending Rice University. Mr. Matthew Raigosa was our salutatorian. He is attending the University of Chicago. WEHS received a Silver Medal Rating from US News and World Report this year, marking it as one of the United States Top High Schools.

2010-2011 School Year

Weslaco East High School graduated its EIGHTH class of students. Ms. Anahi Gonzalez was our valedictorian. She is attending Stanford University. Mr. Frank Puente was our salutatorian. He is attending the University of Texas- Austin.

2011-2012 School Year

Weslaco East High School graduated its NINTH class of students. Ms. Dpbetlehem Reyna was our valedictorian and also the recipient of the Gates Millennium Scholarship. Ms. Leslie Ochoa was our Salutatorian. During this school year WEHS enough in student enrollment to be re-labeled as a 5A school to begin during the 2012-2013 school year for competition purposes.

2012-2013 School Year

Weslaco East High School graduated its TENTH class of students. Felicia Juarez was our valedictorian. Ms. Emmanuel Fiscal was our Salutatorian. During this school year WEHS played in the first "Tinaco (Water Tower) Bowl" against crosstown rival, Weslaco High School. WEHS won the battle 24-0. EAST SIDE- STRONG SIDE.

2013-2014 School Year

Weslaco East High School graduated its ELEVENTH class of students.

2014-2015 School Year

Weslaco East High School graduated its TWELVETH class of students.

2015-2016 School Year

Weslaco East High School graduated its THIRTEENTH class of students.

2016-2017 School Year

Weslaco East High School graduated its FOURTEENTH class of students.
